High temperatures and bush fires

9 Jan

We are experiencing terrible bush fires here in Australia. My heart goes out to the people who are suffering.

In the past week Tasmania has suffered the worst with raging fires, life-threatening and causing loss of property. They are now battling fires in NSW and Victoria. Some fires started by firebugs – it leaves me speechless!

Queensland is bracing itself for a scorcher today with temperatures over 40c degrees, Brisbane is expecting 36c.

I wonder how anything thrives in this heat, then I went over to the allotment yesterday and here is a pic taken across the allotments and community farm. A green oasis.

My best wishes to everyone in the way of the fires. It’s amazing to hear of your heat and then see the pictures of your allotment. It’s beautiful.

It is amazing. We are being saturated on the television with images of these tragic bush fires. I went to the allotment to water and was greeted with so much lovely green growth, and the flowers. Mind you, the heat is heading north so it may not look like that in a few days.

I’ve just seen the fires on BBC news and I’ve come straight over here to check you are ok. Like you said, nature is amazing and your allotment looks great. Look after yourself in the heat.

I am not surprised that the fires in Australia are being covered on BBC news. Thank you for checking that I am ok, so thoughtful of you. The worst blazes are further south but the heat has moved north now and Queensland is sweltering. Mostly I try to keep cool by opening all the windows and doors, but on days like this I just have to switch on the air conditioning.

Those plants in the allotment don’t look stressed at all…good soil (that has been ‘built up’ over time with lots of organic matter) and mulching I suspect :-)

Hi Maria. Three things keep my veggies cool, mulch, mulch and mulch.
Not sure anything will keep them cool today though. It’s really hot here, so I’m sure you are feeling it too.

Jean, my thoughts go out to all of those affected by the terrible bush fires. Your allotment looks lovely and lush despite the high temperatures you mention.
    Debb.

Dear Debb. Thank you for your thoughtful words. Amazing that my allotment has stayed so lush but now that the heat has moved north to Queensland not sure if it will be the case before too long. Let’s see just how successful my mulching is. But it’s not a miracle worker when we are getting temperatures like this.

We were 15 minutes away from an out of control bushfire for a short while but the wind was blowing the other way and there were 12 fire trucks fighting it so they managed to contain it. Bushfires are an inevitability if you live in Australia but the fires started by firebugs and carelessness (the massive fire in the South of Tassie was started by someone who didn’t put out their campfire…) are inconceivable. So many lives affected and such devastation. The farm does indeed look like a gree oasis :) . That’s what we gardeners do…we garden against the odds and we help plants to make oasis’s in the middle of the chaos…we belong right up there with the David Copperfields of this world :)

Dear Fran. I have been thinking of you and Steve down in Tassie. I have been following the news and I know you are having a terrible time down there. As you say, as long as we live in Australia we can expect them, but we can do without the stupid folk and the firebugs.
You must have had a scary time when the fires came so close to you and your property. How brave are those fire fighters.
      Stay safe my friend.

We will Jean and thank you SO much for your kind words and thoughts, those fire fighters are amazing and all deserve medals :)

If only we could come to a compromise: you could have some of our miserable wet UK weather, and we could have a few degrees of your scorching-hot temps! I do hope your “green oasis” survives. You will need to post lots of green photos to offset all the black and grey photos that people in Australia will be publishing these next few weeks. Stay safe!

I saw on the news here (US), that Australia had to add a couple new colors to the weather maps to show the really high temperatures. Best of luck. I hope your garden continues to thrive in spite of the heat.

Thank you for your best wishes. Interesting what you are hearing on the US news about Australia’s weather, it is extreme at the moment. Some stuff still grows despite the heat, but it’s a challenge.
